31 Things You Should Know About Yourself

31 Things You Should Know About Yourself31 Things You Should Know About YourselfWhat type of environment drains you creatively? How do you act differently when youre in a group or team environment? What do you bring most to your organization, and what should you really be leaving to other people? These questions may seem a little strange- but we bet theyve at least got you thinking. And they should In fact, think about them enough, and their answers can uncover surprising insights about how you work and, more importantly, how you can work better. Part of a set of 31 things every leader should know about themselves, developed by business adviser Les McKeown for Inc., specific behavioral questions like these can help you hone in on elements of your working style that work well- or, conversely, that hold you back. As McKeown explains, For most people, the key to becoming a better leader lies not in training or skills development, but in self-awareness. For most of us, its our blind spots t hat hold us back, not the things we already know we need to improve on.In other words, maybe you know you tend to get a little heated in a certain meeting. But you might not know that thats due to certain triggers- whos in the meeting, for example, or even that meetings time of day. But by answering questions like What type of people do you fall for too easily? and When is the worst time of day for you to undertake tiresome work?, you might gain a little insight- and be able to make simple changes to improve your routines. Your answers to the 31 questions will each have one of two obvious applications, McKeown writes. Either youll become more aware of leaning too much upon something or conversely, youll become consciously aware of things that affect you negatively, draining your ability to perform.Want to uncover your blind spots? For them, the tendency to procrastinate is a real liability and one that should be fixed.Yet not everyone who delays work has a problem to that degree, though. Here are some instances when it makes sense to hold off on assignmentsYoure feeling distractedSometimes its just plain hard to focus. Maybe you have a sick child youre worried about or you just received criticism from your boss. It can make it difficult to focus on detail-oriented tasks. Rather than muddling through them and making mistakes, you ma y find its better to tackle them later when you can give them the attention they deserve. You dont want to make a snap decisionThere may be times when its wise to ask for a short extension to get something done right. For instance, youre asked 15 minutes before the end of the workday for your opinion on a critical matter. You want to offer thoughtful input, but your mind is focused on finishing out the days tasks and the quick deadline is overwhelming. It may be better to wait until first thing in the morning, when you feel less rushed. You know your peak productivity hoursSome of us are morning people, sharp and ready for the day as soon as we reach our desks. Others, not so much. Procrastination may make sense if you know youll perform better at another time of day.Youre unmotivatedYes, there are times when you just need to kick yourself into gear and get that boring assignment done. Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What

Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now WhatUnemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now WhatBeing unemployed, especially around the holidays, is rough. But it could get even harder in the Big Apple. Come the end of December federal unemployment assistance will run out for New York unless an emergency extension is issued. The New York economy could lose as many as 40,500 jobs in 2011 without the extension, the White House Council of Economic Advisers reported yesterday. This legislation could, in turn, create a job loss domino effect. Fewer jobs means less money put back into the economy, resulting in even fewer jobs, and so on and so forth. The start of what many call the vicious cycle of unemployment. Jobless claims are certainly not limited to New York. Across the country the economy continues to suffer. There are steps to take that can help you avoid unemployment potholes no matter where you are located. For New Yorkers, State Labor Commissioner Colleen Gardner says, T he unemployed should still file claims with the Labor Department, just to keep a continuous record. On the job-seeking front career experts suggest making the most of your unemployment by taking on contract or temporary work, which will help you stay current in your field, and show employers that you have not been idle since your last permanent, full-time job, said Cheryl Palmer, president of executive-coaching firm Call to Career in Ladders article How I Spent My Unemployment. All of the experts seem to agree that when it comes to unemployment, either benefits or joblessness, maintaining continuity is key. Two-thirds (68%) say theyd look for a partner within their state borders or closer this includes a third (35%) who wo uldnt look for love outside their neighborhood or city. When dating through apps or zugnglich, the limit on love is 30 miles or less. Two-thirds of people say theyd set a dating app or sites drehort radius for matches at 30 miles or closer.More people are against getting into a long-distance relationship (41%) than are open to it (27%). Should they find a long-distance partner, however, many would consider moving to be with them- 44% would be open to the idea, compared to 26% who would be against it.A long-distance relationship should last at least six months or more before considering a move to be together. 68% say theyd need to be dating for a period longer than six months.Among those who have moved to be with a partner, 30% met their significant other online through a dating app or site.Two-thirds of people set a dating app location radius of 30 miles or lessAfter picking out your sharpest selfies,it turns out the biggest decision you make when setting up a dating profile might be s etting your location radius for matches. Most dating sites and apps require that you set a location radius that tells the platform how close or far youre willing to look for love.Overall, 30 miles or less seems to be the magic number - about two-thirds (62%) say they would set a distance radius at or under that amount if they were to use a dating app.On dating apps, what location radius would you set as the max distance for matches?Millennials are generally more likely to set a smaller radius, with about half (49%) open to matches within 20 miles or less. This could reflect the stage of life they are at. With more open to casual dating and also with a larger pool of peers also looking for partners, they might feel they dont need to look very far for matches.Men are also more likely to set a smaller radius on dating apps, with 48% setting a dating radius of 20 miles or less - compared to 42% of women.Dating and distance 2 in 3 wouldnt date outside their stateWhen it comes to looking for a new partner, most people are unwilling to search too far from home.We asked people to name the furthest distance theyd be willing to go to find a partner if they were to start their search today.About a third (35%) are willing to look for potential partners only as far as either their city or neighborhood.Another 29% would be willing to look within their state or closer for a partner. In all, two-thirds (68%) of people had distance limits within their state lines or closer.State lines are the boundaries or potential love for most - but not all. Some people said they were willing to go the distance for true romance13% would be open to dating matches across state lines or further. Another 9% say they wouldnt consider distance when dating.Heres a look at how dating distance preferences differed among specific demographicsRelationship statusSingle people who are actively dating or seeking a partner are less likely to say they arent willing to look for partners beyond their city lim its (48% compared to 39% among general respondents).GenderMen are more likely to say they would only look as far as their neighborhood or city (43%) compared to women (37%).OrientationPeople who identified as homosexual or bisexual are more likely to be willing to look for love across state lines (16%) or to not consider distance (12%).If you were seeking a romantic partner, how open would you be to a long-distance relationship? In line with the trend of people saying theyd look for love closer to home, more people say theyd be against entering long-distance relationships (41%) than would be open to it. That includes 17% who would be very against a long-distance relationship, as well as 24% whod be just somewhat against it.Thats far more than the 27% of people who are open to a long distance relationship, of which just 7% say theyd be very open to such an arrangement.Additionally, 6% say that distance wouldnt matter to them, and another 27% are neutral on the topic.Going by generatio ns, millennials are the most open to long-distance dating. Just 39% would be against it, and 30% are open to it.Its not a shock that most people prefer to date closer to home and would prefer not to be in a long-distance relationship. The miles between them can make it trickier for couples to connect with each other, strengthen their bond, and develop and grow as partners. But while a long-distance relationship isnt what most people would look for, if it happens, they say theyd move to pursue it.When asked how willing they would be to relocate for a long-distance partner, 44% say theyd be either very or somewhat open to the idea. By comparison, just 26% say theyd flat out be against (again, either very or somewhat) the idea of moving for a significant other. But among people willing to move for love, nearly half (49%) say theyd be open to relocating across state borders or further. That includes 17% who would move as far as across the country, and 7.4% whod consider moving out of the country for love.To warrant a move, 2 in 3 think a relationship should be 6 months or olderThe length of a long-distance relationship is also a major factor that plays into deciding whether to move for love, our survey finds. Two-thirds (68%) say theyd consider moving for a romantic partner only after being together for six months or longer. So who would be willing to move for a partner theyve dated for less than 6 months? Twenty percent of respondents say theyd consider moving for a partner at or before 6 months of dating.Women are more likely to say they wouldnt move for a romantic partner (13% women vs. 11% of men) and are more likely to expect to be together for more than a year (41% vs. 35% for men).Men are more likely to expect to be together for a shorter time before relocating, with almost a quarter (24%) expecting to be together for 6 months or less compared to just 18% of women. Most long-distance couples meet on dating apps and sitesLooking for love and are open to long-dis tance relationships? Youre best off trying your luck on dating apps and dating websites. Three in 10 people who moved for love say they met their romantic partner through a dating app or website. But dont be afraid to try old-fashioned matchmaking methods, either, such as getting set up or introduced by family members or friends.Twenty-two percent say they met the partner they moved for thanks to their social circle. Another 15% met their significant other in a social setting, and 14% met through work. While most people wont be looking for long-distance love, if it happens, moving can be a smart move. Our survey also showed thatmoving for love works outmore than it doesnt. Of people who have moved for love, 73% say theyre glad they took this step. This article first appeared on Hire a Helper.

Sucking Up The Essentials

Sucking Up The Essentials Though the office suck-up is often the guy that everyone loves to hate, more and more frequently sucking up is becoming required behavior for getting ahead in a career. And whether we want to admit it or not, most workers have fallen back on well-honed suck-up skills from time to time. But is this really a bad thing? Perhaps if suck-ups were more positively labeled as enthusiastic, or ambitious, more people would start using this useful strategy a little themselves. Former self-proclaimed teachers pet, Lindsey Pollak, who also authored the book From College to Career, says, Getting in good with the people who manage you and are above you is a pretty smart thing to do. These are the people who pay you and promote, so of course, they have a say in how successful youll be, she continues, Really successful people focus just as much on their relationships as on the substantive parts of their job.Though, admittedly, there are some approaches to sucking up that are better than others. While putting in some well-intentioned efforts to build a better relationship with your boss can help get you positive attention from the higher ups, laying it on too strong can risk damaging your professional reputation. Sucking up without being the suck-up can be achieved by approaching people with a genuine attitude. It is easiest to say and do the right things when you actually know what your boss wants. Speak to your boss and figure out his or her expectations for your position and how they would like to be approached by those that he or she oversees. Next, consider that flattery should never be used to replace hard work. In other words, dont expect your boss to be impressed by your ability to spout out compliments by the drove but fail to do your job. To truly show your ambition, volunteer to do more work or initiate new projects. But dont go too far since your coworkers may not look very kindly on having their work taken out from under them. While on the topic of flattery, be aya not to do it too much and it helps to make it genuine. While it is true that most people like to be flattered, it is also not difficult to discern between true respect and empty compliments. And dont overdo it. There comes a point when too much flattery can become downright awkward, and even stalker-like especially since the dawn of social media. If you are friends with your boss on Facebook and constantly saying how cute her kids are or how brilliant her posts are, that gets a little creepy, Pollak says. Finally, dont forget to do a little sucking up in reverse. Career adviser Charles Purdy says, You also have to suck down because you just never know where people will end up. Its very shortsighted to suck up to one person and not another. Seek to be helpful to everyone whom you work with closely. The more expansive your professional network, and the more people who like you , the better aussicht you have of making the right impression on a person who can benefit your prospects at your company now or into the future.

The 5 things no one really tells you about success

The 5 things no one really tells you about successThe 5 things no one really tells you about successIf asked how I rose to my position as CEO of a global company and what someone should do to achieve similar success, in the past I would have said work hard and get promoted. If pushed, I might add volunteer for things, but that welches generally the extent of it. Over time, though, I realized tzu siche are certain principles you can follow to make koranvers youre moving ahead in your career. Here they are.Take real risks You sometimes need to get out of your comfort zone and take risks or you may be left behind. It can be scary and no one likes to fail, but if you dont put yourself out there and try, you will never know. In sixth grade, my daughter Danielle announced she was running for class president. I admired her passion and didnt want the experience to discourage her or dampen her confidence and enthusiasm. I told her I was very proud she was willing to take this risk and that sh e had little to lose. I suggested we have a get together with a dozen of her friends, win or lose. Danielle didnt win the election, but to this day, she remembers the experience with fondness rather than disappointment. Always puts yourself forward for new opportunities and ask for what you want. Become extremely resilient Randy Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Melon University who wrote a book called The Last Lecture. Before Randy died of pancreatic cancer, I had the weg to work with him. One of the many things I took from Randy was his attitude about brick walls. The brick walls are there for a reason, he said. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop the people who dont want it badly enough.Rise above your peers As you embark upon your work life, you will learn things they dont teach you in university. In her first job right out of college, Danielle noticed there was a clique among her co-workers- a group of people who ordered lunch together and went out for Happy Hour drinks. After several months, she still couldnt break through to the inner circle, so she turned to me for advice. Work isnt high school, I told her simply. I reminded her she had many other friends and at work, it was less important to be popular than it was to be successful. In high school there is a hierarchy that doesnt change. In an organization, unlike in high school, hard work, smarts, and dedication can put you ahead. Less than a year into that job, Danielles manager left and she was promoted into his role. Since the team was short-staffed, she took on extra work and people began to rely on her. The clique saw Danielle in a different light and, finally, she started to feel like she fit in. The funny thing is, by the time that happened, she was on her way to a leadership role and didnt care as much. Danielle had learned there is a difference between being friends and being friendly, and this is an important distinction as you move up the ladder. Get close to philanthropisch resourcesNo matter what your role is now and where you would like to go in the near and far future, if your company has a Human Resources (HR) department, group, business partner, or person responsible for optimizing talent, you should take advantage of that fact. Reach out and meet your HR representative. Your HR rep can be a great advocate. In addition to identifying training courses that might be appropriate to learn new skills, HR reps can help you scout out opportunities to volunteer for extracurricular activities, introduce you to people of influence, and serve as a sounding board if you run into difficulties. The bottom line? HR can assist in ways you cannot imagine yet So, once youve made an initial connection, ask your rep if you can touch base every few months to share your progress, get feedback, and discuss any issues. Take on projects beyond your job descript ionMy strategy for standing out has always involved volunteering. Volunteering has been a great way to learn new things, meet a broader group of people, and increase exposure. In one instance, when I was a salesperson, my company wanted to create pricing manual, so I offered to do it. A short time after completing the document, there was an opening for a sales manager. Several of us were equally qualified, but because of the visibility Id acquired from the pricing manual, I was the one selected. This promotion jump-started my career as a manager. What if your company doesnt have committees or task forces for you to join? See if you can create one. Identify something that needs improvement and lead a group to provide recommendations. Start a business book club. Be a buddy for a new hire. If you attend a training class or a business event or conference, summarize the learnings and share them with your team. Or, organize a Lunch n Learn on a topic with which you have some experience.Ad apted with permission of the publisher, Motivational Press, Inc., from MOM.B.A. Essential Business Advice from One Generation to the Next ?by Karyn Schoenbart with Alexandra Levit. Say what you think and dont be apologetic about it

Say what you think and dont be apologetic about itSay what you think and dont be apologetic about itHave you ever stated your opinion only to be shot down by someone else?Maybe by your spouse, boss, parents, or best friend? Or even a stranger? It happened to me many times in the past. Growing up, I always had an opinion about everything.Having an opinion doesnt mean you know everything. It just means you have something to say. You could be wrong. But often times, my teachers, friends, girlfriends, co-workers, and even friends would immediately say things like, Thats elend true So gradually, I gave up speaking my mind. I became afraid.Last week, I published an article about why I avoid toxic people. I mentioned that I think less than 1% of the population has values. You wouldnt believe how many people were offended by my opinion. How do you know its less than 1% And a bunch of nasty words. Two people even emailed me a whole essay about why its wrong.People were truly hurt. Ironically, in the same article, I mentioned that if you feel hurt, thats because you decided that. There is no truth - only opinionIn the article, I clearly stated my opinion. The sentence starts with I think, for a reason.Of course, I have no idea exactly how many people lack values. No one knows.Plus, everything thats presented as a fact in life is, in reality, an opinion. So when people try to challenge your opinions, know that they are playing a useless game.Theres only your truth. It reminds me of a section in my book, THINK STRAIGHT. Here it isAre facts also the truth? The answer is no. Confusing, right? Its just like life. For example, does God exist? I dont know. Ive never seen any evidence. Does that mean God is not real? It doesnt matter what I think. If God has an impact on the way you live, its true for you no matter what scientists say.Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher who had a profound impact on cowboyfilm philosophy, famously said There are no facts, only interpretation s.Nietzsche was a man of true self-knowledge. Sigmund Freud even said that he had a more penetrating knowledge of himself than any other man who ever lived or was ever likely to live.He was a very analytical thinker, especially when it came to his own thoughts. When Nietzsche said that there are no facts, he meant that we, as human beings, ultimately rely on our interpretations of reality. Theres no way to confirm reality objectively. That doesnt mean nothing is real and that were all living in a big dream. We just have to realize that facts are not the same thing as the truth. That simple thought saves you a lot of energy because it means no one can be right or wrong. Dont bother with convincing people with different opinions of the truth. Its just not a practical thing to do. Or even a stranger?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIt happened to me many times in the past. Growing up, I always had an opinion about everything.Having an opinion doesnt mean you know everything. It just means you have something to say. You could be wrong. But often times, my teachers, friends, girlfriends, co-workers, and even friends would immediately say things like, Thats not true So gradually, I gave up speaking my mind. I became afraid.Last week, I published an article about why I avoid toxic people. I mentioned that I think less than 1% of the population has va lues. If God h as an impact on the way you live, its true for you no matter what scientists say.Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher who had a profound impact on western philosophy, famously said There are no facts, only interpretations.Nietzsche was a man of true self-knowledge. Its just not a practi cal thing to do.
